The origins of the first fortifications date back to the 8th century! It became famous through Godfrey of Bouillon, the leader of the first crusade in 1096 and advocate of the Holy Sepulchre, who engaged the castle with the Archbishopric of Liège to finance his expedition to the Holy Land.
Finally, during the wars of Louis XIV, it underwent significant modifications carried out by Vauban and remained occupied by the military until 1830.
